What’s in a AloeVera? Health Benefits and A brief History of AloeVera

What’s in a AloeVera and its Health Benefits. Christopher Columbus believed that these foods were indispensable to mankind – Wheat, Grapes, Olives and ALOE VERA. In 1494 during his second voyage to America, his sailors suffered from malnutrition, scurvy and many other diseases. Aloe Vera pulp helped save their lives.

200 later, the Caribbean Island of Barbados, would be the historic location, where botanist and explorer Philip Miller, would discover and officially name the plant, aloe barbadensis miller. Miller, the chief gardener at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London, known for cultivating the most exotic plant species, was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society. He singled out the miraculous plant calling it Barbadensis MILLER, from over 400 varieties of aloe grown today, as being most nutritious and healing of all.

Aloe made its first documented appearance in 2200 B.C.E., in the Sumerian City, of Nippur. The Sumerians were well versed in the use of aloe for its purgative and digestive healing properties.

The plant of immortality

Egyptians called Aloe “the plant of immortality.” A Papyrus, dated from 1552 B.C.E. documents 12 different formulas for mixing aloe with various agents to create internal and external remedies. The Greek pupils studying at the medical schools of Egypt took this knowledge back home, where they included aloe in their pharmacopia and documented its value in many healing modalities.

As legend has it, Alexander the Great, upon the advice of Aristotle, conquered the island of Socotra, off the coast of Africa, to secure supplies of aloevera in order to treat wounded soldiers.

The aloe vera plant is a widely studied natural herb and is commercially grown for its health benefits. Aloe Vera contains over 200 biologically active, naturally-occurring constituents including polysaccharides, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, and minerals. These promote nutrient absorption, digestive health, a healthy immune system, and a reduction of nitrates.

Aloe Vera and Digestive Health

This brings us to one of the main benefits of Aloe Vera, it’s ability to support digestive health. Aloe helps to maintain a healthy intestinal pH while promoting a gut friendly environment for probiotics in the digestive tract. Not only does it assist in controlling harmful bacteria growth, it also reduces toxins in the body. Additionally, it assists in the elimination of waste that can slow down cellular process and inhibit nutrient absorption. Aloe vera promotes an efficient metabolism, thereby reducing the presence of toxic byproducts like ammonia and nitrates.

Metabolism refers to what the body does with nutrients after they are absorbed. A disruption in metabolic process means leads to a drop in energy levels. It also leads to build up of toxic byproducts like nitrates and ammonia in the body. High nitrate particle numbers are a directly result in poor digestion and metabolism.

We at eco Foods believe that digestion is an amazingly profound mind-body-spirit multidimensional process. The digestive system is the fulcrum of a total emotional and mental experience. It is responsible for processing not only all food, but also the daily thoughts and actions. Positive energy consequently leads to a good lifestyle. In other words, one metabolize not only food, but also one’s holistic being!

To conclude, we find ourselves in the footsteps of our ancestors and amidst an ongoing miraculous journey with a plant that shapes our well being. Finally, Eco Foods is proud to provide the highest quality of Aloe Barbadensis Miller to all our customers.
